Designing a Soul-Led Life — Through Travel, Place, and Inner Change
In April , I started to release a series of essays, reflections, and travel-based explorations that sit at the heart of everything I’ve been quietly building over the past few years.
It’s called Designing a Soul-Led Life.
Not as an idea. Not as a concept. But as something lived, tested, and slowly shaped through experience.
This series weaves together several threads that have always been part of my work —
psychology and spirituality, nervous system healing, identity and transition —
with something that has become just as important:
Place, movement, and the deeper pull toward exploration.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be re-sharing the very first few. you can see the whole series if you join Patreon free start here
Some of this will live here.
ALL will sit over on Patreon — Think of Patreon as a gallery of moving pieces, different collections, different moods, different depths.
🌙 Why This Series, Why Now
This work comes from lived experience.
From years of intensity.
From burnout.
From rebuilding.
From asking deeper questions about how we live — and who we become when we stop living on autopilot.
And from a quieter, more honest place that says:
There has to be another way to live.

You don’t need to have it all figured out to begin.
You don’t need a five-year plan.
You don’t need certainty.
You just need a moment —
a pause —
a question that gently asks:
“What would it look like to live in a way that actually feels like me?”
This series is an exploration of that question.
In real time.
Across landscapes.
Through writing, movement, and reflection.
And you’re very welcome to walk it with me.
The work I was doing with people… was the same work I was doing within myself.
The collapse.
The questioning.
The nervous system overload.
The identity shifts.
The creativity returning.
The gradual move from survival… into something more honest.
What I didn’t have at the beginning was a framework for it.
But looking back now, I can see there was always a pattern.
A set of interconnected dimensions shaping how we live —
identity, relationships, pressure, trauma, meaning, environment, and the body itself.
Not as separate problems to fix.
But as a whole system that either constrains us… or brings us back into alignment.
This series sits inside that wider arc.
Designing a Soul-Led Life: A Slow Return to Yourself
There comes a moment in many people’s lives — often quietly, sometimes abruptly — when the life they’ve built no longer fits in the same way. Not because everything is wrong. Not because they’ve failed. But because something deeper inside them has begun to stir.
For years, I didn’t have the language for this. I only had the symptoms.
A restlessness. A depletion. A sense of living on autopilot. A feeling that I was performing a version of myself that no longer felt true.
From the outside, my life looked fine. I had a long career in mental health, I was raising children, I was doing what was expected. But inside, something was shifting.
What I didn’t realise then — and what I understand now — is that this was the beginning of a soul-led life.
Not a dramatic reinvention. Not a sudden spiritual awakening. But a slow, steady return to myself.
🌙 The Years of Intensity
Before I ever thought about soul-led living, I lived through years of intensity. Kitchens. Customer service. Samaritans. Mental health services. Schools. Families in crisis. I became very good at holding other people’s distress. Very good at staying calm. Very good at carrying responsibility.
But I didn’t realise how much it was costing me.
There were days when I would cry before work. Days when my nervous system felt like it was vibrating. Days when I felt like I was disappearing inside my own life.
I used to joke about “vodka Friday.” Not because I drank much — I didn’t — but because it was the only thing strong enough to cut through the intensity of the week.
Looking back now, I can see that my nervous system had been living in amber and red for years.
I didn’t know it then, but I was living in what trauma researcher Bessel van der Kolk calls “a body that keeps the score.” My system was overloaded. My mind was exhausted. My soul was whispering for something different.
🌿 The First Nudge
The shift didn’t begin with a grand decision. It began with a nudge.
A question that surfaced in 2016:
“Do I want to keep living like this?” what do I really want?
I didn’t know what I wanted instead. I only knew what I didn’t want anymore. I wanted 3 days a week when this was unusual. I wanted to travel but didn’t know how I would manage it. I wanted a simpler life yet was used to drama crisis and managing multiple projects and even when it was quiet I got bored easily, not realising how long it takes to learn to be ok slowing down .
That’s often how soul-led living begins — not with clarity, but with contrast.
I started writing blogs. I started taking photographs with a iPad my son gave me and it opened up a whole new world and passion . I started exploring yoga and meditation and noticed how shattered I really was and all I wanted to do was sleep.. I started listening to the quiet voice inside me that had been drowned out by years of responsibility. But fear often got in the way . I couldn’t see a way forward or a way out, and it’s like that for many of us.
I didn’t realise it then, but I was beginning to move from an ego-led life — shaped by expectation, fear, and survival roles — and shaped by knowing I had value in the workplace. I felt confident and competent . but was moving into the early signals of a soul-led life, guided by intuition, curiosity, creativity, and presence.
🌊 The Accident That Changed Everything
In 2019, I had a car accident that shook me to my core. The physical pain was one thing. The PTSD was another. I really thought that was it. I was done . I was not going to be able to work, and when I did I was running only on one cylinder.
Anyone who has lived through a life shock, accident or serious illness and trauma knows that the body remembers long after the mind wants to move on. My nervous system was in a constant state of alert. Old traumas resurfaced like multiple videos playing in my mind. I couldn’t work more than a couple of days a week, everything was a struggle and I took to creating a healing system, not knowing if I was ever going to heal from that space.
And then the pandemic arrived.
For many people, lockdown was a shock. For me, it was a continuation of the stillness I had already been forced into.
I slept. I stretched. I listened to sound healing frequencies. I doodled. I practiced mindfulness. I taught yoga online. I created a Meetup group for women to connect and support each other . I also really enjoyed no longer being in the office and waiting time talking office politics . I loved working at home.
Slowly, my system began to settle. Slowly, I began to feel again. Slowly, I began to return to myself. But it took over 3 years until the pain started to subside and I felt more confident going out and about . With my lovely new convertible as a rebellion against only having practical things I took to the road, the sea and stretched my life out in front of me . opening up to new experiences love and life
🌱 What a Soul-Led Life Actually Is
A soul-led life is not about escaping responsibility. It’s not about quitting your job or moving across the world. In fact I often support my clients not to do that unless they really know they can handle the leap. It’s not about becoming a different person. Its about shedding all the things that get in the way. The rumination, inner paranoia, ideas that make the world look grey or thoughts that feed low mood. Ideas that you cant do what you love or the struggle to let go of low self esteem dn the need for others approval. We can know what we want, but often people struggle to take any action, regretting it years later.
It’s about alignment.
It’s about living in a way that feels:
-
honest
-
grounded
-
meaningful
-
expressive
-
connected
-
alive
It’s about listening to the deeper part of you that knows when something is off — even when your mind is trying to be sensible.
A soul-led life is guided by:
-
intuition
-
curiosity
-
creativity
-
presence
-
truth
-
timing
-
inner alignment
It’s the shift from forcing to flowing. From performing to expressing. From surviving to living.
🌿 What Blocks a Soul-Led Life
Most people don’t lack desire. They lack space.
The biggest blocks are:
-
trauma patterns
-
people-pleasing
-
overfunctioning
-
toxic relationships
-
survival roles
-
fear of being “too much”
-
fear of being “not enough”
-
nervous-system overload
-
living in chaos
-
emotional exhaustion
You cannot hear your soul when you’re drowning in noise.
This is why silence matters. Why nature matters. Why breath matters. Why boundaries matter. Why rest matters.
These are not luxuries. They are prerequisites for clarity.
🌙 The Nervous System: Green, Amber, Red
One of the most important things I teach is the nervous system continuum:
-
Green: grounded, steady, coping
-
Amber: stressed, anxious, overloaded
-
Red: overwhelmed, burnt out, spiralling
Most people try to redesign their lives while living in red.
It doesn’t work.
Before clarity comes regulation. Before change comes steadiness. Before vision comes breath.
This is supported by:
-
Polyvagal Theory (Stephen Porges)
-
Trauma research (Bessel van der Kolk)
-
Somatic psychology (Peter Levine)
-
Mindfulness research (Jon Kabat-Zinn)
-
Behavioural activation (CBT)
The science is clear: When the nervous system settles, everything else becomes possible.
🌈 Creativity: The Return of the Self
Creativity is not just art. It’s expression. Many people proclaim “im not creative, but we create every day, when we cook, when we design and idea for the house, when we solve a work issue, when we help our kids with homework, when we plant a seed or get the knitting out.
It’s how you:
-
speak
-
dress
-
write
-
move
-
photograph
-
decorate
-
connect
-
create meaning
Creativity is often the first sign that the deeper self is returning.
For me, photography was the doorway. Then writing. Then yoga. Then teaching. Then travel. Then building a life that felt like mine again.
Creativity is how the soul speaks.
🌟 Tiny Tweaks That Change Trajectory
You don’t need to change everything. You just need to change something.
Ask yourself:
“If I could make one small change that would make my life feel more like mine, what would it be?”
The answer might not come immediately. But asking the question is where the shift begins.
A soul-led life is not a destination. It’s a reorientation. A series of nudges. A few brave decisions. Some grief. Some healing. Some beauty. And eventually, a life that feels like your own.
A soul‑led life doesn’t arrive all at once. It arrives through nudges. Through small risks. Through moments of awe. Through the slow return of the self you lost along the way.
If you’re watching this and something in you feels restless… If the life you built no longer fits… If you’re craving something quieter, truer, more aligned…
And the next chapter of your life might begin with something as small as a question:
What would make my life feel more like mine?
What desires and dreams have I been ignoring “waiting for some day”
From reflection to design ….
